Create an Unpacking Plan for Moving In

You’ve packed all your belongings, driven hundreds of miles and pulled into the driveway of your new home. As you look at your new dwelling, you wonder, “Where do I begin?”

Here are some moving in tips to help unload the truck and get settled in your new home.

Have a plan

moving boxes

Create a move-in plan ahead of time so you have a general idea of what items need to go where. You may want to draw up a sketch of the rooms in your new home and develop a rough outline of where larger items will go.

Also, be sure to label your moving boxes with what rooms they’re intended for. You may even want to color code your boxes by room.

Start with the big stuff

To make your move as easy as possible, unload the heaviest and biggest items first. You’ll want to move these pieces, which usually includes furniture and appliances, first so that you can get them in their proper place, and can later place smaller, easier-to-move items around them.

This will also help you visualize what certain rooms will look like, how they’ll flow and what other furniture or pieces you’ll need to make them complete.

Move boxes upstairs first

Since you’re bound to get tired as the day wears on, get everything upstairs while you still have some pep in your step. This will keep you from making trips upstairs later in the day when you’re spent!

Unpacked bathroom

Unpack only what’s necessary

Only unpack what you absolutely need on move-in day. Your first priority is to simply get everything out of the moving truck and into your new home. Once that’s complete, only unpack items you’ll need within the first day or two of you being there.

Take breaks

Make sure you don’t wear yourself out completely when moving in. You’ll need some energy in the next few days to unpack and get your home the way you want. Therefore, save some energy for the necessary nesting that’s to come in the next few days.

Moving in to a new house is time-consuming and can be stressful. However, if you go into it knowing it’s temporary and thinking about how amazing it will feel to be settled in your new home, you’ll get through it with a smile on your face!
